Rail FAQ
Quick answers to the questions we hear most. If yours is not here, contact support.
Setup and settings
Do I need to duplicate my theme before I change anything?
Before you edit any code, yes. Go to Online Store > Themes, open the three dots next to your theme and choose Duplicate. The copy is your backup. Changing settings in the theme editor is safe and can be undone, but a duplicate is still a good habit before bigger changes or an update. For custom code, we also recommend hiring a Shopify Partner.
How do I add my logo?
Open the theme editor, choose Theme settings (paintbrush icon) > Logo and favicon and upload an image in Logo. Without a logo, Rail shows your store name as a wordmark. The giant masthead on the home page always shows the store name in large type.
Can I turn off the giant masthead or the floating dock?
Yes. Select the Header section. Giant wordmark masthead can be Home page only, All pages or Off (compact bar everywhere). For the dock, Show the dock chooses when it appears, and Show the dock on large screens turns it off on desktop, so a compact bar stays at the top instead.
How do I change the colors?
Rail uses color schemes. Open Theme settings > Colors, select a scheme (Scheme 1 to 6), and change its eight colors. Every section picks a scheme with its own Color scheme setting, so you can also just switch a section to a different scheme.
How do I change the fonts?
Theme settings > Typography. Choose a font for Headings, Body and Accent from Shopify's font library. Heading size and Body text size scale the type, and Heading case can force lowercase or uppercase.
How do I turn off the swinging hangers and other animation?
Theme settings > Motion > uncheck Enable motion. Rail also turns motion off automatically for visitors whose device is set to reduce motion. Individual sections (Rail, Statement, Announcement bar) have their own motion settings too.
Why is my product card shape different on collection pages?
Cards use the shape from Theme settings > Product cards > Default media shape, unless a section overrides it. The Collection page, Search page, Rail, Shelf, Wall and Product recommendations sections each have their own shape setting.
Does Rail work for products other than clothes?
Rail is designed for fashion (clothes, shoes and bags), but nothing stops you using it for other products. Choose a plain card shape (Rounded rectangle or Square), and use the Collection page grid. Some details, like fit notes and the Fitting room, make most sense for fashion, and you can remove those sections.
Products and collections
I do not see filters on my collection page. Why?
Filters come from the free Shopify Search & Discovery app. Install it, add filters under Filters, and make sure Enable filtering is on in the Collection page section. Without the app you will see sorting only. See Filters.
Why do my color options show as text instead of swatches?
Swatches use Shopify's native option swatches. Set a product category that supports color, link the Color option to the category's color attribute, and make sure the Variant picker block has Show swatches for options that have them on. See Variant swatches. On product cards, also check that Theme settings > Product cards > Color option name matches the name of your option (for example "Colour").
How do I show "Runs small / True to size / Runs large"?
Create a text product metafield such as custom.fit, enter a value containing small, true or large on each product, and enter custom.fit in the Fit metafield setting of the Fit notes block. See Fit notes.
How do I add a size guide?
Create a page in Online Store > Pages, then select the Size guide block on the product page and choose the page. It opens in a pop-up. See Size guide.
The "Complete the look" band is empty or missing. What now?
It shows complementary products from Shopify's Search & Discovery app. Open the app, go to Recommendations > Complementary products and choose products for that item. Products without complementary products show no band. See Complete the look.
Why does a product not show the "New" badge?
Add the tag new to the product in the Shopify admin. Also check that Show new badge for products tagged new is on under Theme settings > Badges. A card shows at most two badges, so a sale or sold-out badge can take the place of the new badge.
The low stock badge never appears.
It needs inventory tracking turned on for the product's variants, and the product's total stock must be at or below the number in Show low stock badge at or below (default 3). Setting that value to 0 hides the badge.
The pickup availability block shows nothing.
It appears only when at least one location offers local pickup and has the product in stock. Turn on local pickup under Settings > Shipping and delivery > Local pickup.
Cart and checkout
Does the free shipping bar change my shipping rates?
No. It is a display only. Real rates and free shipping conditions are set in Shopify under Settings > Shipping and delivery and applied at checkout. Use the same amount in both places. See Free shipping bar.
Can I use a cart page instead of the drawer?
Yes. Theme settings > Cart > Cart type > Page.
Can I customize the checkout page with Rail?
No. Checkout is controlled by Shopify, not by the theme. Branding and options for checkout are found in the Shopify admin under Settings > Checkout and customization (availability depends on your Shopify plan).
Languages, apps and updates
How do I translate my store?
Add languages in Shopify Settings > Languages and translate your content with the free Translate & Adapt app. See Languages and markets.
Does Rail work with apps?
Yes. Rail supports app blocks in the Header, Footer, Product, Featured product, Fitting room and Cart footer sections, and you can turn on app embeds from the editor. Apps that add their own code can still behave differently from the theme, so check with the app developer if an app does not look right.
How do I update Rail without losing my work?
Duplicate your theme as a backup, add the update, check it in the editor and publish when you are happy. See Update Rail safely. Code edits are not carried over automatically.
Support
What does support cover and how fast do you reply?
We answer within two business days, fix bugs in Rail and help you use its settings. Customization is not included in the theme price. See the support policy, then send a request.
Can you customize Rail for me?
Custom code and design changes are outside Rail support. We recommend hiring a Shopify Partner, and always duplicating your theme before any code edit. We are happy to point you to the right setting if the option already exists.
